Our Nutrition Educational Project
Nourishing Generations offers hands on dynamic classes that encompass nutrition education, healthy food preparation, culinary skills and fun fitness activities all led by certified nutrition consultants, natural chefs and fitness trainers. We are linking professionals and community members to bring about needed positive changes that will help reverse the rising trend of childhood obesity and diabetes. Our Programs range from a twelve-week series to single hour long classes. For more information on our current programs please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also don’t forget to check our blog for updates!
Children come together for an exciting, interactive nutrition, cooking and fitness experience six-week class series. Natural Chefs assist the children in making yummy recipes while Nutrition Educators lead them in fun, interactive games and activities designed to teach about healthy eating. Recipes and nutrition handouts are provided, in English and Spanish, if needed, so that children can share what they learn with their families and prepare these foods at home. Fitness instructors lead the children in yoga, games, circuit training or other fun activities, such as hula hooping for health or zumba dancing. Parents can join in on classes and participate in at home activities.
Youth programs focus on culinary skills, kitchen hygiene, meal planning and shopping, along with nutrition education, preparing young adults with the knowledge and skills for a lifetime of healthy eating.
Live Oak School District
Our classes through the run throughout the school year in the after-school programs at all three Live Oak School District Elementary Schools. We teach our nutrition, cooking and fitness program to 50-55 third, fourth and fifth graders at each school. An exciting aspect to this program is the "teaching the teachers" aspect - we hold nutrition trainings for the after-school staff and provide them with curriculum and support (including an NG chef!) to teach a site-led class for each of the NG-led classes, reinforcing the lessons learned and contributing to a more comprehensive nutrition and lifestyle education.
Foster Youth - Encompass Community Services
NG began working with foster youth in Spring 2015 in collaboration with Encompass Community Services in Santa Cruz. This program has been very successful - the youth are so enthusiastic and eager to learn! We are excited to be providng this program to assist young adults transitioning out of foster care to learn about nutrition, and the planning, shopping for, and cooking healthy meals.
Affordable Housing Communities - Mid-Peninsula Housing
We enjoy offering six-week programs at several of the Mid Peninsula Housing sites in Santa Cruz County. In the past year, our program has been presented at Parkhurst Terrace in Aptos, DSunny Meadows in Freedom, Via del Mar, Shapiro Knolls, and San Andreas in Watsonville. The children involved in these classes run from ages 5-16.
NG’s new program is working with WomenCare, a nonprofit that provides support to women during all phases of the cancer journey. Our classes, all taught in Spanish, share information about eating strategies before, during, and after cancer treatment. Our chef and nutritionists provide nutrition information and help create eating plans full of cancer fighting foods that help one stay nourished and hydrated and help manage common side effects of cancer and cancer treatment.
